Sign Language - Oscar Sharpe (2010)

This short caught my eye primarily due to the way it was shot visually and the feel it portrayed upon myself as a viewer. The short based in London, Oxford Street and breaks down the barriers as the character talks directly to the viewer about the job he does and gives the audience an insight into his personal life and what hes like as a person - having this direct insight creates a strong connection between the viewer and character which ultimately makes the short more enjoyable.. due to the charcter being quite loveable, on the other hand a lot of this could be down to great casting and script.

The man in the short speaks about the people he knows and who works the same street as him, he introduces them and gives us a little detail about them. He speaks about his promotion and how he feels grateful for it but he feels he is letting his father down as he worked that street before him which holds humourous implications due to the job seeming so insignificant. Oscar Sharpes presents a short with a documentary feel which lightly makes a mockery of this mans job, but in a humourous way which myself found to be a great watch.

The camera work has a high use of depth of field, shallow focus and a handheld feel (more than likely filmed on a dlsr) which again creates a stronger relationship from character to viewer, shallow focus allows the attention within the frame stay 'focused' upon the character allowing for us to pay more attention to what hes saying and facial expressions - the strong performance from the actor plays an important role here.

The music is mellow and soft throughout. This relates to the softness of the character and his ramblings. The music plays a strong role in setting that tone and stays constant throughout untill his alarm goes off (a pinnacle part of the short which indicates his last day on the job is over) this breaks from his ramblings and pushes our interest on what hes saying (gives a more down to earth feeling to the film) and concludes the film leaving a sense of Journey, which is relevant the assignment set.

I really liked this piece and thought it was a great piece that engaged the audience with the characters life. This give the short film more meaning and helps the audience follow the narrative. From this I can take away the importance of creating that character to viewer relationship. The character needs to be interesting enough and hold a good enough backdrop to keep the viewer entertained. The performance is also important and needs to be believable enough to create that connection. I plan to spend time looking for a goo and suitable actor, when it comes to planning our own piece.
